For my hook lesson, I initially had planned to do a game introducing the founding fathers that the students would be assigned for their final task. However, I discovered that is not a hook lesson. It is obviously important but it wasn't laying the foundation for the unit. The final task for the students is to write a play, soliloquy or poem about the founding fathers at the Constitutional Convention. The big idea of this unit is that the founding fathers impact still radiates importance in today's society. To write this they need an understanding of the time period and what life would have been like for these men and other colonists. I decided to do a virtual field trip with videos and pictures with colonial Williamsburg. I am unsure of the independent practice part of this lesson. Is the addition to the KWL chart sufficient? I think 5th graders are definitely capable of navigating a website that is a virtual field trip without the teacher doing it with them.
